Sampling & custody

Agree what the sample represents

A measurement applies to the material actually analysed. Before testing a lot, agree how a representative sample will be selected and prepared. A single surface point or an isolated fragment may not describe the entire lot.

Keep a clear record

  1. Describe the submitted material, its condition and identifying marks.
  2. Record weighing arrangements and sample identifiers.
  3. Confirm who takes the sample and whether witnesses may attend.
  4. Agree how packaging, seals and custody transfers will be recorded.
  5. Ask whether retained samples or sealed splits are available.

Cutting, drilling, melting or other preparation may change the item. Get the proposed preparation explained in advance, including the quantity consumed and the return of remaining material.

The selected laboratory should specify a sampling procedure suited to the material. This page is a preparation guide and does not arrange physical custody.

Questions for your enquiry

What does the sample represent? Who will take it? Which records link it to the original material? What will be retained or returned? How will the sample reference appear on the report?

Start with the right questions.

Prepare your material details and testing objective before contacting a laboratory.
