Ore & concentrates

Illustrative close-up of a rough mineral specimen

Illustrative mineral photograph; no grade or sample identity is claimed.

Start with the sample and its history

Tell the laboratory where the sample came from, the material form, approximate mass and any previous preparation. Explain whether the goal is exploration, process control or another specific analytical question.

Discuss sample preparation

Material can vary across a lot. Ask the laboratory how crushing, splitting, pulverising or other preparation will be specified. A quick reading of one surface is not an estimate of the grade of an entire stockpile.

Agree the analytical route

Discuss a gold assay method suited to the matrix and expected concentration, as well as reporting units and limits. Fire assay is one established approach; the laboratory must confirm its suitability and finish for the sample.
